Carolin Kropff's artistic work moves between the fields of fine arts, arts and crafts with a focus on traditional methods of production and socio-cultural aspects and art mediation. Her work includes various media such as painting, printmaking, textile art, and projects in the field of Socially Engaged Art (SEA).
Kropff explores the connection between personal experience and inherited, collective knowledge that is passed down from generation to generation. She investigates how images are created, the relationship between storytelling and assigning meanings, and the significance of the chosen material. She translates her observations and analyses into artistic processes that are shaped by the chosen material, the medium, and specific production methods.
In 2020, Carolin Kropff founded STUDIOSPACE Lange Strasse 31, a platform for exploring artistic design processes and experimenting with forms of communication in art. Since 2015, she has worked with British artist and fashion designer Felicity Brown.
Carolin Kropff studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1991-1995) and the Städelschule Frankfurt (1996-1998). She learned the craft of men's tailoring at Maßschneiderei Schmidt in Wiemeringhausen and received a journeyman's certificate in 1988. From 1989-1991, she worked as a costume assistant and men's tailor at the Theater Dortmund. From 1999-2002, she maintained a studio in Madrid, Spain, and from 2006-2011 in Dubai, UAE.
She has three children and lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and Bad Vilbel.
